For 40 years the pre-academic course has represented Saint Louis’ strength to acquire high-level preparation for admission to limited number academic courses.
The course aims to prepare the students on the knowledge and intonation skills of major scales, major and minor pentatonic, natural minor, harmonic and melodic, chromatic, blues scale, mixolydian scales and major/minor/diminished/augmented triads with relative inversion, intonation and recognition of 4-voice chords: maj7, min7, half-diminished, dominant seventh with relative inversion, intonation and recognition of all modal scales of the major mode.
The repertoire focuses on the study of songs of the jazz tradition, of the American songbook of musical derivation, of standard songs, of jazz composition, bebop songs, classical and modern vocalese, of historical and didactic solos, of post-bop songs, of modern and contemporary jazz.
Specific attention is paid in the pre-academic three-year period to the study of the vocal technique, which will allow the student to face any style and language with awareness, making the most of the full voice with the technique of changing the register, the half voice, the compressed voice. This correct setting also allow to safeguard the vocal chords over the years.
The study of contemporary harmony goes from the basics to the 5-voice chords, with tensions and alterations, altered scales, modal exchanges and harmonization techniques of melodies.
The Ear training course will bring each student to know how to recognize melodies, chord progressions, rhythmic patterns, up to develop the ability to transcribe a mini-song, without the aid of tools.
Each student personalizes his/her own style and repertoire by choosing the teacher for individual singing lessons.
