For 40 years the pre-academic course has represented Saint Louis’ strength to acquire high-level preparation for admission to limited number academic courses.
The course aims to prepare the student on an in-depth knowledge of 4 and 5 voices chords with tensions (9th, 11th and 13th) in a narrow and open position, quarter voicing with 3 voices, use of melodic embellishments within the chords, harmonization techniques of a melody, improvisation skills on harmonic successions of medium difficulty.
In addition the student will deepen the knowledge of blues, harmonic structure, accompaniment, blues scales, improvisation and the accompanying styles for Pop-Rock, Pop-Ballad, Shuffle, Funk, Reggae, R&B, Bossa Nova, Swing, developing the ability of first-sight reading of melody chords, accompaniment and indicated style.
The study of contemporary harmony goes from the basics to the 5-voice chords, with tensions and alterations, altered scales, modal exchanges and harmonization techniques of melodies.
The Ear training course will bring each student to know how to recognize melodies, chord progressions, rhythmic patterns, up to develop the ability to transcribe a mini-song, without the aid of tools.
Each student personalizes his/her own style and repertoire by choosing his teacher for individual instrumental lessons.
