Nicola Di Tommaso
Nicola Di Tommaso was born in the small Italian town of Guardialfiera, in the Molise region’s countryside, not far from the seaside, in 1983.
At a very tender age, he began to study and play guitar. After been awarded a Diploma in Music Theory and Solfeggio from the Music Academy “Alfredo Casella” (Aquila, Italy), he completed his studies with a Minor in Classic Guitar at the Music Academy “Giulio Briccialdi” (Terni, Italy), under the masterful supervision of Stefano Mastruzzi and Leonardo Gallucci.
His drive and compelling need to expand his musical technique, theory, repertoire and compositions has brought Nicola to experiment with many different kinds of rock music e to develop a passion for Jazz, which ended up becoming his principal object of study. He has studied with several instructors, like Nicola Cordisco at the “Thelonius Monk” of Campobasso, Eddy Palermo and, then, Dario La Penna at the “Saint Louis” of Roma. Upon completion of his studies under the supervision of prof. Umberto Fiorentino, in 2011 he was awarded a BA degree in Jazz from the Conservatorio Licino Refice (Frosinone, Italy).
He has attended several courses of specialization in jazz music run by the “Roma jazz’s cool”, enjoying the chance to study guitar with Kurt Rosenwinkel and Jonathan Kreisberg, and taking part into the seminars organized and directed by Mark Murphy, Enrico Pierannunzi, Rosario Giuliani, Enrico Rava, Maurizio Giammarco, Giovanni Tommaso, Roberto Gatto, Chris Potter, Aaron Goldberg and Clarenc Penn.
Currently, Nicola is attending the last year of the three-years course in “Jazz Music” held at the “Berklee College of Music”, organised in collaboration with the Umbria Jazz.
Nicola di Tommaso is also the leader of the NDT Quartet, a four-piece band with whom he has toured and performed, together with other artists as well, at numerous Italian and international festivals such as the Festival Internazionale di Jazz Contemporaneo, held at Casa del Jazz in Rome. In collaboration with the Prague’s Sextet of Stephan Marcovic, he has performed at the Festival Jazz Na Hrade in Prague. Moreover, he has taken part in several editions of the Festival Adriatico delle Musiche and participated to the Festival del Folklore, in Termoli. He has played at the Music Village of Brussels (Belgium), at the Festival Jazz dei Due Laghi, working with a quintet whose leader is Ettore Fioravanti, at the Festival Eddie Lang, at the Festival JOHN e JAZZ (Abruzzo, Italy). He also had the opportunity to play with the Big Band directed by Maestro Roberto Spadoni.
Nicola has won different prizes: among the most cherished awards, is the second prize at the Music Competition Jazz Contest, for the section “Original Music”. While continuing studying and performing, Nicola also teaches “Jazz Guitar” at two Schools of Music, the “Saint Louis College Of Music” and “L’Ottava” School. He has been assistant of Cinzia Spata at the Fara Music Festival, and has worked together with the French bassist Dominique Di Piazza.
Nicola di Tommaso, along with his band, the NDT Quartet composed by Daniele Tittarelli (alto saxophone), Francesco Galatro (double bass) and Enrico Morello (drum set) has put out his first album this year, forthcoming under his own name, whilst keeping touring Italy and performing at different festivals and music concerts.
