An extraordinary composer, arranger and orchestra conductor Vince Mendoza is among the most influential musicians over the past 20 years. Winner of the Grammy Award with musicians like Joni Mitchell, Sting, Melody Gardot, Elvis Costello, Bjork, Joe Zawinul, John Scofield, Charlie Haden, Al Di Meola, Dave Liebman, Randy Brecker, the Yellowjackets. (Mendoza website)

Vince Mendoza will dive in completely for a whole week of highly artistic educationion here, in Saint Louis. It will be a tremendous international contribution to first and second level academic courses. In addition there will be two master classes open to the public.

VINCE MENDOZA SCHEDULE

1st level Master (aut. Miur)

June 12th to June 16th

Vince Mendoza will be conducting Saint Louis Big Band orchestra (for 24 hours in total), which is formed by 1st level Master degree students.

The Saint Louis Big Band concert, conducted by Vince Mendoza, will be held on June 16th at the Teatro Eliseo in Rome.

1st Cycle Degree and 2nd Cycle Degree (aut. Miur) 

The Combo Orchestra composed by 15 students of 1st cycle academic Courses will perform the opening act of the concert which will be held in the Teatro Eliseo on June 16th. The compositions that are going to be performed will be written by the best students of the 2nd cycle Composition Course, under supervision of Vince Mendoza both in writing the arrangements, and in the gesture of conducting.

 

Master Class open to everyone

  • Commanding rhythm – Thursday, June 15th 2017 – 10am to 12am in Via Cimarra 19/b

Workshop with Vince Mendoza, centered on the grooves and how to translate rhythmic ideas into the arrangements for large ensembles.

Guided listening of many groove examples will allow you to analyze them in detail and study their application in arrangements for wind instruments and rhythm section.

  • Role playing in ensemble composition and arranging –Friday, June16th 2017 – 10am to 12am in Via Cimarra, 19/b

To properly tell a story in a composition or an arrangement for a great ensemble you need to know its “cast” or rather the characters and the role they play in it.

During the workshop with the great conductor Vince Mendoza, students will discuss the different roles that organic orchestra should play in, and how these roles can change and/or improve the story that is being told in both, its form and its performance.
